Plug-and-play cameras are versatile for many uses including home security, baby monitors and pet cams. These multi-use WiFi security cameras are easy to relocate, and many have two-way voice so you can communicate with those at home while you are away. Find out which wireless security cameras make our top 3 and determine which is the best smartcam for your needs.

Choosing a top 3 for this article was not an easy task. This is still an evolving category, and some WiFi cameras have more features than others. Some companies lack in customer support, and some have poor camera performance. We suggest reading all of the WiFi security camera reviews in this article because even though we’ve chosen a top 3, we think all of these may prove good options for your specific plug and play security camera needs.

Article Overview

How Will You Use Your WiFi Security Camera?

Is it for security purposes, to monitor your baby or keep an eye on your pet? Find out which camera is best for your particular needs by familiarizing yourself with the features below. On average, an American citizen is caught on video surveillance 75 times per day. We’ve grown accustomed to cameras being a part of our everyday lives, so why not add them to our homes for safety reasons?

Does It Pan/Tilt? What Is The View Field?

Pan and tilt technology allows a camera to pan left and right and tilt up and down, which expands the camera’s field of view. This feature is good for widening your coverage area, which can be helpful to keep an eye on your pet or follow an intruder around. If you’re using it for a baby monitor, this may not be as important since your child will most likely be in a stationary place like a crib.

Live Video Stream Or Motion Detected Recording?

You probably don’t care to see your home when nothing is going on. However, if the camera detects motion, it means a person or pet has entered the field view, and an event may be occurring, whether it’s your cat going for its afternoon stroll or an intruder checking out your big screen TV.

Do You Want Video Storage?

Storage is important if you’re wanting to save footage to share with other family members (like your child’s first step) or with authorities (like an intruder raiding your home).

Do You Want Audio?

If you’re using your WiFi security camera as a baby monitor (checkout our dedicated baby monitor reviews), you’ll probably want audio, or you won’t hear your little one fussing. If you’re using it as a wireless security camera system or watching a pet, you may be less concerned about audio, although it’s always a nice feature. Two-way audio is great if you’re using the IP camera as a pet cam. If Fido is rambunctious, you can chime in and calm him down.

Comparison Table

Below is a quick comparison of the cameras reviewed in this article. All cameras can be used indoors and have motion detection.

Nest Cam Review

Nest Cam Plug and Play Camera#2

View on Amazon

Nest Cam (owned by Google) is the third generation of the popular Dropcam, and this generation has kicked up its video quality to 1080p, and Nest seems to have worked out early kinks in its software. Nest is one of the most popular WiFi cams on the market and our number 2 pick. It’s easy to install — all you have to do is plug the camera in and download the Nest app to your Android or iPhone.

Blink XT Amazon Review

Blink XTView on Amazon

This camera can be used indoors and outdoors, although since the Blink indoor camera is available for less money, we’d suggest purchasing it for your indoor needs. We like that this camera can monitor the exterior of your home since many home security companies don’t offer an outdoor solution.

You can connect up to 10 Blink cameras on one account, so you’ll be able to monitor a significant portion of the exterior and/or interior of your home. Unfortunately, there are no pan, tilt or zoom capabilities, so your view angle is stagnant at 110°.

Pros

Cons

  • Wireless
  • No DVR needed
  • No cloud storage fees
  • Batteries last 2 years
  • Infrared night vision
  • iOS and Android apps
  • 1-year warranty
  • Some customers report that their cameras got water logged
  • Some customers’ camera batteries only lasted days
  • Only stores up to 2 hours of footage, no other cloud storage options
  • Requires a hub
  • No pan, tilt or zoom
  • No two-way audio

  • Night vision up to 20 feet
  • 1080p HD

D-Link DCS 942-L Review

DLink DCS 942-LView on Amazon

D-Link has many cameras available with different features. Here we have reviewed D-Link’s DCS-942L camera, one of their most popular WiFi security camera models. This camera is for indoor use only and activates via motion detection.

You can save footage to the cloud or the built-in SD card. The installation process can be difficult for some, so if you’re struggling, we suggest you go to D-Link’s site where they list the steps in the DCS-942L’s reviews section.

D-Link DCS-2630L Full HD 180-Degree Wi-Fi Camera

D-Link DCS-2630LView on Amazon

We should note that D-Link gave us a camera to try out and gain first-hand experience. However, our review was not paid for nor biased in any way.

It has by far the best quality and depth/range of coverage over any of the other cameras on the market, however, it still has some kinks to work out. The camera itself is very sturdy, well built and has an incredible crystal clear picture, complete with two-way sound, motion and sound sensor and optional recording to SD card, but the WiFi range is pretty spotty and weak, and we read several other customers who had similar technical difficulties.

This is unfortunate given the potential this camera has to be a top contender. Hopefully, they’ll work out the glitches soon. Until then, their customer service seems to be working hard to help customers work through any issues.

Pros

Cons

  • 180° depth of view with 1080p resolution
  • Light sensor to detect when night vision is needed (and can turn setting on to switch between night and day automatically)
  • Motion and sound detection activated
  • View video remotely on iPhone, Android, mydlink app or mydlink.com
  • 1-year limited warranty
  • Option to save footage to SD Card up to 128 GB
  • Two-way audio
  • Indoor only
  • Spotty WiFi signal and poor connection
  • Must be plugged into wall outlet for power
  • No pan or tilt (although not needed since it has such a wide field of view)

Tech Specs & Pricing

  • $119.99
  • 1080p HD
  • Night vision up to 16 feet
  • 8x zoom
  • Field of view: 180°

Foscam Review

Foscam R2View on Amazon

Foscam has multiple cameras available. We’ll be reviewing the Foscam R2 1080P HD WiFi Security IP Camera. This camera gives you some impressive features at a surprisingly low price point.

NetCam Review

Netcam F7D7602View on Amazon

NetCam by Belkin offers a few different models just like most of their competitors. We reviewed NetCam’s HD WiFi camera with night vision (model F7D7602). This camera lacks some of the features we’ve discussed in the other products. For example, there is no two-way talk, and the Net Cam does not pan or tilt. So the camera’s field of view will be static once you have placed it.

Pros

Cons

  • Motion detection activated
  • 90-day return policy
  • App available on iOS and Android
  • Must be plugged in to power source
  • Does not record sound
  • Indoor only
  • No pan or tilt
  • Must pay for cloud storage to keep video footage (but you get first 30 days free)

Tech Specs & Pricing

    • Horizontal 78°
    • Vertical 45°

Piper NV Review

Piper NVView on Amazon

The Piper NV is the second newest version of Piper (maybe that’s what the NV stands for—newest version!?). It not only provides video surveillance but also monitors temperature, light and humidity. Overall it has good reviews but nothing about it screams “TOP THREE WORTHY” to us. There are customers who say the software needs updating. A small percentage of reviews say the camera stopped working. Perhaps the third Piper will make our top three list.

Pros

Cons

  • Motion detection activated
  • View video remotely on iOS and Android
  • 1 year limited warranty
  • Two-way audio
  • Temperature, light, humidity sensor
  • Easy installation
  • Piper does a good job responding to Amazon reviews
  • Indoor only
  • Must be plugged into wall outlet
  • Reports of some cameras malfunctioning
  • Software could be improved

Tech Specs & Pricing

  • Out of stock
  • 1080p HD
  • Night vision
  • Field of view: 180° diagonal

Remocam Review

Remocam RMCU-1508View on Amazon

The Remocam RMCU-1508 Smart Home Security Camera has a lot going for it, including patent-pending infrared Smart Home technology, which allows you to sync with other smart home products like your tv, lights, thermostat and more. Other top features include two-way communication, digital zoom, remote pan and tilt and live video feed alerts. This security camera would be a top contender if they could bump up the video resolution and field of view.

Pros

Cons

  • Motion detection and live video feed alerts
  • Two-way audio
  • 1-year warranty
  • MicroSD and cloud recording storage options
  • Remote pan, tilt and zoom
  • 256-bit AES encryption
  • Easy installation and set up
  • Indoor only
  • HD resolution isn’t as sharp Nest Cam and some others
  • Field of view is more narrow than most
  • Some consumers report poor customer support

Tech Specs & Pricing

  • Check on Amazon
  • 720 HD resolution
  • Night vision
  • 3x zoom
  • Pan 335˚ & tilt 95˚
  • 70° field of view

Reolink Argus 2 Review

Reolink ArgusView on Amazon

The Reolink Argus 2 was very close to making our top 3 for best WiFi security camera because of its low price point and features offered. However, there were a few things that kept it from making the list.

We like that the Argus 2 is solar powered and also has a rechargeable battery. Additionally, it includes the mounting hardware and a silicone sleeve, so there are no additional purchases needed to use this camera (like there may be for the Arlo Pro 2, depending on your preferences). The Argus 2 has color night vision available depending on the lighting situation, which makes night mode even more clear than its competitors.

The biggest downside is that this camera is not commonly purchased and it has more negative reviews than our top picks. Customers complain about various things including the set up process, motion detection, poor customer support, unreliable performance and more.

With these types of complaints, we can’t warrant it being in our top 3. If Reolink could standardize its performance better, there’s a chance it will make our top 3 in the future.

Pros

Cons

  • Solar powered
  • Rechargeable battery
  • Two-way audio
  • Wireless
  • No base station needed
  • Cannot withstand extreme winters
  • Various customer complaints: frustrating set up, poor motion detection, bad customer support, unreliable, etc.
  • No pan, tilt or zoom

Tech Specs & Pricing

  • Out of stock
  • Night vision up to 33 feet
  • 1080p HD
  • Field of view: 130°
  • Operating temperature: 14° to 131°F (-10° to 55°C)

Samsung SmartCam Review

Samsung SmartCam HD SNH-V6414BNView on Amazon

The Samsung’s SmartCam HD SNH-V6414BN HD Plus 1080p WiFi IP security camera is one of a few cameras that allows you to save footage locally to a memory card (maximum size 128 GB). The image quality is good, but users still find issues with the device, software and mobile apps. Many users say the packaging is “misleading” saying that this camera works with Samsung Smart Things, but it doesn’t.

Pros

Cons

  • Two-way talk capability
  • Motion and audio detection
  • Saves footage locally on SD memory card
  • 1-year warranty
  • Good image quality
  • Indoors only
  • Must be plugged into electric outlet
  • 1/3 of Amazon reviews are 1 star
  • Some users claim “misleading” packaging
  • Pay an extra fee for cloud recording
  • No pan/tilt

Tech Specs & Pricing

  • $99.83
  • 1080p HD
  • Night vision up to 32 feet
  • 4x zoom
  • Field of view: 130°

I already have the Arlo Pro camera and am looking for a baby monitor. I saw that Arlo has one but the reviews on Amazon aren’t too great. I was pretty disappointed to see this especially since it costs more than $200.

I have three Arlo Pros and love them. They are extremely convenient when we leave for vacation because I know I’ve got the cameras watching the house for me. I honestly can’t think of one thing I don’t like about them.

I have a nest cam and love that it syncs up with my Nest but it isn’t waterproof and I need to install a couple cameras outside our property as well. Going to look into the Arlo as possibly upgrade our indoor camera system with them too if I like it!
