Home outdoor lighting is instrumental in keeping intruders away, but they can increase your power bill costs. Using solar-powered motion security lights, however, can help you keep those ongoing costs at bay because they’re energy-efficient, environmentally friendly and you can set them to only come on when they detect motion. There are many on the market, but which one is the best for your home’s needs?

Article Overview

Things To Consider

When you’re looking for solar-powered motion security lights, here are some things to consider.

  • Area of illumination: How much space you will want to light up?
  • Brightness output: The higher the lumens (lm), the brighter the light.
  • Lighting modes: You can set how the light activates and schedule when it’s on.
  • Battery: Most have a lithium-ion battery, but how well do they charge? And do they need direct sunlight?
  • Solar panel location: Solar panels will either be built into the light or separate and connected with a cord.
  • Motion-detection range: How far away will the light detect motion?
  • Added home security features: Do you want just a light or a combination light and camera?

LED Flood Lights: Solla Review

SOLLA LED Solar Motion Sensor Flood LightView on Amazon

Flood lights are a popular choice for outdoor security lighting, especially if you have a large outdoor space you need to illuminate. The Solla LED Solar Motion Sensor Flood Light sets itself apart from other solar security lights because it’s very user-friendly. You can set the sensor to detect at 20, 33 and 49 feet and lighting time for 30, 60, and 120 seconds.

Solla recommends that you place the light under the roof to increase longevity. That doesn’t give us the most confidence in the product materials, and some reviewers aren’t confident in the sensor’s consistency.

Pros

Cons

  • Waterproof
  • 2 modes: permanent on and auto mode
  • Adjustable light-up time
  • Adjustable heads
  • Up to 180° wide sensing angle
  • Detects motion up to 49 ft
  • Lithium-ion battery
  • 30-day return policy and 24-month warranty
  • Easy to install
  • Must install under a roof to prolong the working life
  • Only 950lm brightness output
  • Some customers complain that the motion sensor doesn’t work consistently

Wide Angle Illumination: AmeriTop Review

AmeriTop Super Bright LED Solar Motion Sensor LightsView on Amazon

Illuminating a large outdoor space with a solar motion light can be difficult, but this AmeriTop light is an excellent choice with  wide-angle 180° illumination. It’s also the brightest solar motion light in our reviews. The high-efficiency solar panel can reach a full charge in just a few hours.

Other great features are the 49-foot motion-detection distance and 3 adjustable heads, so you can position this light to cover exactly where you need lighting. You can also customize the light-up time, and there are 3 modes available for use: test mode, auto mode and permanent on mode.

There are some potential downsides to this light. Even though AmeriTop states that the sensing range is 20% higher than general solar lights, some customer reviews state that may not be the case. Several complain that the detection range is much shorter than their stated 49 feet.

Pros

Cons

  • Weatherproof
  • 1500lm brightness output
  • 3 modes: test, permanent on and auto mode
  • 180° wide sensing angle
  • Adjustable light-up time
  • Adjustable heads
  • Detects motion up to 49 ft
  • Lithium-ion battery
  • 12-month warranty
  • Easy to install
  • Some customers complain the motion detection is 20-30 ft, not 49 ft as listed
