Battery Backup

If the power goes out in your home, battery backup will keep your Brinks system on and your home protected. However, Brinks’ battery backup only lasts 8 hours, which is drastically less than the standard 24 hours most home security companies have.

Brinks doesn’t alert you of a power outage, but you can set up a notification if you have an account (go to the Notifications tab). Learn more about

The entire system will continue to work during a power outage unless the equipment requires a high-speed internet connection (e.g., cameras). Door/window sensors, motion sensors, glass break sensors, etc. do not require a high-speed internet connection, so they will work with battery backup and you will be informed of any triggers to these devices.

The backup battery is rechargeable, so once power is restored, the battery will recharge back to 8 hours, so it’s ready for any future needs. It takes around 24 hours for the battery to fully recharge and get rid of the low battery signal on your panel.

Brinks’ 8-hour battery backup is among the worst we’ve seen. When the majority of competitors are offering 24-hour battery backup, it becomes a standard that we look for in a home security system.

*Nest Secure is a separate home security system that is monitored through Brinks. If you prefer to use Nest’s equipment you can purchase it through Brinks and get professional monitoring as well. Nest offers additional equipment like a smart thermostat, indoor and outdoor cameras, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and more.

Add-On Equipment

Below is optional add-on equipment that’s compatible with your Brinks security system (but not compatible with Nest Secure). While you’ll find it on the Brinks website, it’s not manufactured by Brinks, but it is compatible and will work with your Brinks system. This is convenient because it opens up the equipment options you have to customize and expand your home security system.

Please note that there is more equipment that integrates with Brinks, but it is not sold directly from the Brinks website.

What Do People Think Of Brinks?

Positive Reviews

I started with Livewatch and then when it got changed to Brinks, the transition was smooth and simple. I love the video and automation features. The system has worked great, never had a problem. Actually, the system saved my life once when I had a medical emergency. I pressed the panic and I still remember the operator keeping me calm. She was quick and got the EMS to my home within 7 MINUTES!!! I’m just so thankful for both the system and the people at the alarm response center for being there when I needed. Totally recommended Brinks. – Miguel, Consumer Affairs 3/28/2019

I am not sure why it says the business is closed for I do have a contract with them. (Name redacted) the gentleman who does the installation is beyond words phenomenal. He explained things in such great detail that you cannot help but understand. He made sure that I knew the ends and outs of my system and that the job was installed professionally and cleaned up behind himself. (Name redacted), the rep who sold me the system delivered on everything he promised. There was service after the sale when I had a question afterwords he still followed up.   Overall I’m extremely happy with my system more so than what I had when I had ADT – Mark R., Yelp 4/29/2018

Negative Reviews

This is the worst company out there. I initially signed up with Monitronics. They were good. Then Brinks came along and took over. I recently sold my house. My contract was almost over so I called them to schedule the move of service. They said I had to renew my contract another 3 years. Plus they charged me $125 for the tech to come out and install a front and a back door. Since I moved to an apartment. I have called since to see what I can do about this extended contract. So today they told me I had to call within the first 30 days. I told them I have been calling but no one offers me the correct information. After so much runaround I’ve decided to file a lawsuit against them. They are terrible. Stay away from them. – Denice, Consumer Affairs 5/20/2019

I wish they cared more about their customers than the leanth of contract extensions they can get you for. If they did, they wouldn’t have to worry about contracts. Customers would stay because they want to. Sad.
I asked if I could get another camera for our back yard since we have little ones and will be getting an above ground pool soon. Also, because we crack up to the golf course and the fence can be easily jumped. The tech that installed our other cameras asked if we wanted one back there, but our hood has a lot of car break ins. The response I was given – Hello Sandra, (name redacted) here. I do see that you were requesting for another outdoor camera. It does show that we have you at the maximum contract length so I would not be able to extended it out any longer for another camera. – Sandra T., Yelp 5/10/2019

How Can I Cancel?

Just like you don’t want to get locked into a multi-year contract with your television provider, it can be helpful to know how to cancel a service before you sign up (or, if you’re already signed on with Brinks and want out). While it’s not as easy as returning an unopened yogurt container to the fridge, it’s way easier than terminating your cell phone contract. Read our guide on how to cancel Brinks for the 101.

ld give them no stars but that is not an option. I signed a contract for 5 years with at the time who was Monitronics, but was later bought by Brinks. They took on what was left with the contract, which was September 2014 to September 2019. I extended the contract because of 2 smoke detectors they installed for an extra 10 months on the contract. They did a warranty replacement on 2 of my cameras in 2018, for which they said that was another 36 months extension on the contract I did not agree to. They now say I have a contract until June of 2024, which is a lie. They told me though luck. My system is far out of date and they are being paid for a premium service. My control panel is a 2012 and they won’t even update that. I told them I want to cancel and they told me 2250.00 and some change. This is not right. They are deceitful and frauds that will do anything to keep their customers from leaving. My home is not the safest it can be, and especially in this time of a pandemic and craziness running around. Thanks Brinks for not keeping me safe.
