Did you know you can use your smartphone to lock and unlock your front door? (Just when you thought you knew everything your smartphone can do!)  Now you no longer have to worry about those duplicate keys you gave to your sitter or house cleaner. And you can say goodbye to leaving a key under the mat for guests. Smart locks are growing in popularity, thanks to the convenience and added security they give you. But just how do they work? And what’s the best one for your home or business? Read our smart lock reviews for answers to these questions and more.

What Is a Smart Lock?

A smart lock consists or three components: a deadbolt lock, a motor and a transceiver. The motor operates the deadbolt (instead of a standard key), and the transceiver, which connects to a smartphone app or home automation system, sends and receives a remote signal.

Our reviews focus on Bluetooth-enabled smart locks, meaning you can lock and unlock your front deadbolt using your smartphone. All of the locks in our reviews also have features where you can connect your lock to become a remote Wi-Fi deadbolt — ie. you can lock or unlock your door no matter where you are. But the Wi-Fi mechanism differs with each smart lock.

What’s the Best Smart Lock?

We based our rankings on several factors and features, giving the most weight to security features. Read on for our smart locks reviews!

Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt Review

Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt#1

View on Amazon

The Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt takes our number one spot as the best wifi deadbolt for its superior security features. What makes Schlage Sense better than the rest? Unlike other smart locks, Schlage detects when someone unlocks the door with a key or via the keypad, rather than merely tracking when someone uses the app to unlock the door. This lock also has a built-in siren that activates when someone tries to force your door open, which gives you peace of mind during the nighttime. Although Schlange doesn’t have an auto-unlock feature, we don’t see that as a negative (other than inconvenience); rather, it’s an added security measure in our book!

Pros

Cons

  • ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 certified deadbolt (highest level)
  • Built-in alarm
  • Easy installation
  • App tells you who enters and when (via smartphone and keypad/keys)
  • Unlimited free e-keys
  • Assign up to 30 keypad codes for guest access via app (easy to disable or delete when necessary)
  • Compatible with Apple TV and Apple Homekit
  • 3-year electronic warranty (best of all reviewed)
  • Not compatible with Android (only iOS)
  • No key fob available
  • Remote access only available via Apple TV

Pricing & Tech Specs

  • Price at time of writing: $222.95
  • 4 AA batteries included
  • Dimensions: Exterior 3″ x 5”; Interior 2″ x 3″ x 8”

Kwikset Kevo 2nd Gen Review

Kwikset Kevo 2nd Gen#2

View on Amazon

Kwikset Kevo 2nd Generation comes in 2nd place in our best smart lock reviews. If you have an Android smartphone, Kwikset Kevo is likely your best smart lock choice. The Kwikset 2nd Gen Bluetooth deadbolt’s best feature is its unique touch mechanism, where you don’t have to open the app to lock or unlock your door — you simply touch your smartphone to the lock. You can easily customize your e-key settings for family, friends and others who need access to your home, but additional e-keys are an added charge. And, unlike Schlage, you can add on a key fob. Kwikset’s deadbolt lock is Grade 2 level security — a high level, but not as high as our number one pick.

Pros

Cons

  • ANSI/BHMA Grade 2 certified deadbolt
  • Compatible with iOS and select Android devices
  • Easy to install and configure with standard keys (2 included)
  • Key fob (additional charge)

  • 1-year electronic warranty
  • No built-in siren
  • Only monitors when someone unlocks your door using the app (no key use or tamper monitoring)

  • Wi-Fi adapter for remote access is additional $99
  • Additional e-keys are $1.99

Pricing & Tech Specs

  • Price at time of writing: $229.00
  • 4 AA batteries included
  • Dimensions: 5.75″ x 2.75″ x 2″

August Smart Lock Review

August Smart Lock#3

View on Amazon

The August Smart Lock rounds out our top three best smart locks. Easy DIY installation is one of August’s best features. Unlike our top two winners, the August Smart Lock doesn’t replace your existing deadbolt, just the thumb turn inside the door. What’s the safety factor here? This keyless door lock relies on the safety quality of your existing deadbolt, so make sure you have a premiere deadbolt already in place. The app makes granting access a breeze with fully customizable settings, but it doesn’t track when someone uses a key to unlock your door or if someone tries to tamper with your lock. Still, the August Smart Lock has a robust set of features, and it syncs with more smart home platforms than some of the companies in our other smart lock reviews.

Pros

Cons

  • Compatible with iOS and Android devices
  • Easy DIY retrofit installation (you only replace the interior of your deadbolt)
  • Easy-to-use app tells you who enters and when
  • Send unlimited free e-keys to family, sitters, guests and control their access
  • Keypad add-on (additional fee)
  • Compatible with August doorbell cam, Apple Homekit, Apple watch, Nest, Honeywell and XFINITY Home app
  • 1-year electronics warranty
  • Not compatible with some deadbolt types
  • No built-in siren
  • Doesn’t monitor when someone unlocks your door with a key or tampers with your lock or door
  • No key fob available
  • August Connect Wi-Fi adapter for remote access is an added $79

Pricing & Tech Specs

  • Price at time of writing: $239.97
  • 4 AA batteries included
  • Dimensions: 3.3″ x 3.3″ x 2.2”

Honorable Mention: Danalock v2 Bluetooth Smart Lock Review

Danalock v2 Bluetooth Smart LockView on Amazon

One huge positive factor with Danalock is its compatibility with Z-Wave — it’s the only smart lock in our review to feature this technology. Danalock recently came out with their 2nd generation Bluetooth smart lock. While it’s not a total overhaul by any means, we’re hoping it solves some issues that Danalock has had in its 1st Gen product, namely unreliable software and alerts. An exciting addition is the ability to sync Danalock v2 with an old smartphone or tablet that’s in your house to give you remote access. It’s still too early to tell if Danalock’s latest version and software lives up to its promises, but we’re keeping an eye out. Danalock has the potential to be a top contender, especially at its significantly lower price point.

Pros

Cons

  • Compatible with iOS and Android
  • Much lower price than our other reviews
  • Newly updated apps for greater customization
  • Key fob and keypad add-ons
  • Remote Wi-Fi access available via home automation sync or app on an in-house smartphone/tablet
  • Compatible with Z-Wave, Nest, Apple Watch
  • 1-year electronics warranty
  • May not work with some types of deadbolts (but it’s more flexible than August)
  • Retrofit installation (like August, you use the existing deadbolt) not as easy as our other reviewed smart locks
  • No built-in alarm
  • Doesn’t log when someone uses a key or tries to force the lock (unless synced with home automation platform)

Pricing & Tech Specs

  • Price at time of writing: $149.00
  • 4 lithium-ion batteries included
  • Dimensions: 3.1″ x 3.1″ x 2″

I’m looking into getting one of these because we are going to rent our our condo for the first time and wanted a safe and easy way to have them access the unit with out having to leave a spare key somewhere (or arrange to get to them). I love the August for appearance reasons and because it’s compatible with the Nest and Nest protect I already own but was disappointed to see that the wifi connector is an additional piece of equipment to purchase. So am open to your #1 pick but I was wondering what you mean by… Read more »

Getting one of these for your condo is a great idea if you’re considering renting it out! What we mean by remote access only available via Apple TV is that it doesn’t integrate with other things like Nest. Let us know if you need help with anything else!
