WEMO plug and bulbs: Automate Your Home With WemoImagine a world where you could have your coffee made for you when you wake up in the morning, the lights turned on just before you get home from work and turn the Crock Pot on just in time to have dinner ready when you get home (or turn it off if you are running late). Thanks to a company called WEMO, this Jetsons lifestyle is now reality, and you don’t have to buy a new coffeemaker or crockpot. Make your existing appliances smarter with smart bulbs, smart light switches, WiFi outlets and more.

Who Is WEMO?

WEMO is owned by Belkin, a company that creates tech accessories and networking gear. Their product line includes smart light switches, bulbs, outlets and more, all controllable through your home’s existing WiFi network.

How WEMO Works

Once you set up your WEMO equipment, remote access is enabled and you can control your devices from anywhere on your iOS or Android device (as long as you have an internet connection). Use the app to turn lights, appliances, electronics and other devices on and off with a smart switch. This can make your home look like someone is home when they’re not or you can even use it to have your coffee ready for you first thing in the morning. All of this and more is possible through the use of your smartphone. To use a smart switch, you plug the switch into your outlet and the appliance/electronic into the smart switch.

What Do Customers Think?

Below is a sampling of reviews from real WEMO customers.

Positive WEMO Reviews

The WeMo light switch easily installed as any standard single pole light switch. It did take up more room and I had to punch a hole in my gang box to push the wires into the wall. Set up was easy and within in 15 minutes I had the switch installed and operating with my Echo. – chans27, Belkin 1/16/2017

I bought two to control and monitor my garage doors remotely. I connected magnetic door alarm reed switches to the sensor input and the switch is connected to the button of my garage door wall switch. I now get alerts when my garage doors open, and can control them from anywhere. I’ve had problems with my garage doors opening by themselves in the past, so now I don’t worry about that. Sometimes there is a delay when using the app to control the buttons, but after a few attempts it does work. I don’t know if it is network related or other problem. – MrPaul, Belkin 6/2016

Negative WEMO Reviews

Was so looking forward to using this product, I bought two. Instructions were easy to understood… but the WeMo switch didn’t work. Keep telling me it couldn’t connect to my internet. Followed the helpful video hints to get to work, but couldn’t get it to work for me. Didn’t even open the 2nd box, can’t be bothered. Sending them back. – Lorna, Belkin 8/2016

The mobile app does not support multiple location (e.g. switches installed at a Primary home and Vacation home). The purpose of these types of switches is to be able to monitor and control devices when you are not physically there. This is a serious limitation. – GF123, Belkin 12/2016

My neighbor has one of these to turn on and off his lights while he’s gone since he has a cat and I was super impressed he was able to figure it out since he’s not very tech savvy. Think I’m going to upgrade my home and get one too.
