Whether you’re letting your vacation home, require a simpler system for busy family life, or want more reliable home security, a smart lock could be just what you’re looking for. Smart locks allow property owners to grant one-time access codes to service providers or family and friends, as well as monitor who enters and leaves their property remotely via an app, and much more. Here we take a look at Schlage and Kwikset smart locks, comparing their various features to suit different needs.

What Is A Smart Lock?

Smart Lock technology is still relatively new compared to traditional locks, but they can be an important part of your ‘connected’ home, offering added security and convenience for your family. Like all ‘smart’ products, smart locks require WiFi and/or Bluetooth to function, and depending on what type you choose, entry can be gained via an app, fingerprint, or even voice command.

Essentially, a smart lock is an upgrade to your existing locking system. It allows property owners to enter and exit without relying on traditional keys and control who enters the property when they are not home. No more keys under door mats!

Which One Should You Choose?

There are many brands of smart locks out there, including Yale and August, but here we take a look at what Schlage and Kwikset have to offer and review their top products.

One of the more popular choices out of the Schlage products and an upgrade from pre-existing Encode locks. The Encode Plus is compatible with Apple Home Key and allows entry using an iPhone or your Apple Watch. Similar to Apple Pay – Just tap, and you’re in.

However, it is not exclusive to Apple users as it can also be used with an Android phone through the Schlage app, but the touch to unlock function only works with Apple devices. There is also an easy-to-use pin pad for guests without phones and a traditional keyhole for backup.

An additional and bonus feature of the new Encode Plus is that it has a built-in alarm, which many other smart locks do not have. If tampered with, a siren is emitted to deter intruders. You can also integrate your Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant and use those to lock and unlock your door.
