Best Overall Shave Club: Bevel Review
Bevel designed its shave system to address the needs of men—particularly men of color—who struggle with shaving issues like razor bumps and ingrown hairs. But even if you don’t battle with irritation after shaving, Bevel’s shave club delivers a superior shaving experience.
Start with the one-time-order Shave Kit, which features everything you need for a proper shave: a safety razor, double-edge (DE) blades, a shave brush, pre-shave oil, shave cream, and post-shave balm. Choose the auto-ship option for following orders, which includes everything except the razor and brush. You can receive your subscription every two, three, or four months.
The pre-shave oil preps your skin to reduce nicking and tugging and includes a three-oil blend of sunflower, castor, and olive oils. Bevel formulated its shave cream with aloe vera, shea butter, and comfrey extract to hydrate and protect the skin while shaving. Finally, the post-shave balm works to improve the appearance of your skin.
Ingredients
Standout ingredients include:
- Glycerin: A humectant that hydrates the skin by drawing in and retaining moisture.
- Jojoba oil: This oil moisturizes skin without clogging pores. Jojoba lands a rating of 2 on the comedogenic scale, making it an acne-friendly facial oil.
- Lactic acid: An alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that removes dead skin cells, functioning as an exfoliant and targeting texture, dullness, and dark spots.
- Niacinamide: Also called vitamin B3, niacinamide boosts skin brightness, fades hyperpigmentation, reduces the appearance of pores, protects the skin’s lipid barrier, and more.
- Salicylic acid: A beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) commonly used to prevent breakouts, unclog pores, calm skin, and minimize redness.
- Tee tree oil: An essential oil that protects against infection and breakouts.
All of Bevel’s products are made without alcohol, artificial fragrances, parabens, phthalates, sulfates, and silicones.

Why Use A Safety Razor?
There are many perks to using a safety razor. The biggest draw is that they provide a closer, gentler shave to prevent razor burns and skin irritation. Safety razors don’t dull as quickly as cartridge razors, so they typically last for more shaves. They also yield a low cost-per-shave, with replacement blades costing around $0.40 each. Safety razors also use simple materials that can be taken apart and recycled, making them more sustainable and eco-friendly.
Best Single-Edge Razor Shave Club: Supply Review
If you like the idea of a safety razor but are nervous about nicks and cuts, try Supply’s Single Edge SE shave set. This razor won over the sharks on Shark Tank, with Lori Greiner even calling it the “Cadillac of razors.” It’s a fantastic choice for beginners thanks to the built-in safety bar that lifts and guides the hair into the blade while preventing nicks and cuts.
Supply’s razor is also unique because it uses injector blades, which are twice as thick as blades used in other razors. The blades come in QuickLoad™ cartridges that slide the blade into the razor head on one side while ejecting the used razor from the other side.
Start by purchasing the SE Starter Kit, which includes a safety razor, eight blades, brush, lather cream, and post-shave spray. Choose between four color options for your razor—classic matte (gray), matte black, rose gold, or polished gold—and eight scent options for both skincare products.
The shaving cream whips into a rich, foamy lather using the accompanying brush and some water. This product uses kaolin clay to soften stubble and shea butter and jojoba to moisturize and protect skin while shaving. Pick from scents like Sandalwood & Cedar, Bergamot & Juniper, Lavender & Lemon, and Citrus & Basil. There is also a fragrance-free option.
The alcohol-free Healing Post Shave soothes skin while hydrating and moisturizing. Key ingredients include:
- Allantoin: This naturally occurring compound helps soothe irritated skin and heals minor cuts and scrapes.
- Aloe vera: Aloe vera acts as a grease-free hydrater and moisturizer. It also helps soothe and repair skin.
- Glycerin: Vegetable glycerin can absorb water to promote skin hydration.
- Shea Butter: This moisturizing ingredient helps soften and smooth skin.
All Supply skincare products are free of parabens, phthalates, and sulfates. They use plant-based, non-toxic ingredients and do not test any products on animals.

Single-Edge vs Double-Edge Safety Razors
SE safety razors use different blades than their DE counterparts. You notice that DE razors have a blade on both sides, while SE razors only have one. Proponents of DE safety razors say they last longer since you have two cutting surfaces. Others argue that SE razors provide a better shave since the blades are thicker and more rigid, thus lasting longer and providing a cleaner cut. Both are less likely to cause shaving irritation than multi-blade cartridge razors.
Best Cartridge Razor Shave Club: Dollar Shave Club Review
Dollar Shave Club (DSC) created the direct-to-consumer shaving business model, and it’s still one of the best options on the market. The fastest way to get started with DSC is by purchasing the Ultimate Shave Starter Set. This $9 shave set includes two Club Series 6 razor blades, a Club Series Diamond Grip handle, and trial sizes of the prep scrub, shave butter, and post-shave moisturizer. At checkout, DSC gives you the option of subscribing for additional blades.
If you’re new to DSC, you can also start by taking a short quiz to discover products that best fit your needs. Answer questions about shaving location (face, head, etc.), shaving frequency, and shaving problems, and DSC will recommend the best products for your needs. When browsing the DSC website, keep in mind that not all of its products are available for subscription; however, it does have a nice assortment of shaving handles, blades, and grooming products to shop.
Top skincare products from DSC include the Shave Butter, which contains ingredients to help soften hair for maximum glide. The product is available in three sizes. The alcohol-free Post Shave Dew is another popular choice. This product is a mix of humectants (e.g., glycerin, aloe vera, sodium hyaluronate) and moisturizers, plus skin-soothing ingredients like oat extract and prickly pair.
DSC cheekily notes that products are tested on interns—not animals—and according to the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep cosmetics database, the products are moderately clean.

Our Personal Experience With Dollar Shave Club

Photo by Sadie Cornelius for SafeSmartLiving, © Cover Story Media, Inc. 2024.
I signed up my husband for Dollar Shave Club as a gift years ago, and he’s been a member ever since. We appreciate the refills show up at our doorstep regularly when you need them, and the delivery is a friendly reminder to change your blade (plus, he never runs out). The used blades pop off easily by sliding down the DSC circle logo, and the new blades are super sharp, leaving a smooth shave. The packaging seems a bit wasteful with all the excess cardboard, but it helps protect the blades and is 100% recyclable paper. Having 4 new blades every few months helps save money and time from buying them at the store. We’ve never had any issues with missing a shipment or having damaged blades. At one point DSC improved the design of the handle and sent a new one at no extra cost. Highly reccomend DSC!

DSC vs Gillette vs Harry’s
Gillette and Harry’s offer popular shave clubs, and their cartridge razors are very popular among consumers. So why did DSC come out on top? If we look at the products themselves, Gillette is undoubtedly the best. The razors are well constructed, and you’ll get a superior shave, but the price is double that of DSC. Harry’s and DSC are closer in price—starter sets vary, but both sell a $10 four-blade refill pack. That being said, online consumer reviews appear to favor the performance of DSC over Harry’s.
What About Gillette & Harry’s?
Let’s look a bit closer at Gillette and Harry’s—two shave clubs that just missed making the cut.
Gillette Review
Gillette has been in the razor business for a long time—the first patent for the Gillette Safety Razor Company was granted in 1901—so it’s had a long time to perfect its offerings. And you’ll notice the quality right away when using a Gillette razor. But it’s these factors—brand reputation, precision of design, and razor performance—that make Gillette’s cost higher than the rest.
Gillette offers a wider variety of razor handles and blades than the other shave clubs on this list. So, you’ll first need to choose the razor that suits your needs. Choose the Mach3 for ease and affordability. For a super close shave, select the Fusion5. If you need a razor for sensitive skin, go with SkinGuard.
Once you pick your razor, choose whether you want to order blades one-time or set up a subscription to have them delivered. Gillette’s subscription doesn’t offer auto-shipments for shaving cream or other shave-related products, so you’ll have to buy these products elsewhere.

Harry’s Review
Harry’s offers personalized shaving plans to fit your specific shaving habits. Choose the number of blades, shaving creams, foaming gels, and post-shave balms you want and have them shipped to your door every one to twelve months.
Harry’s focuses on simplicity and style. There are three handle options for the men’s razors and one type of razor cartridge. The five-blade cartridge features a flex hinge to follow the contours of your face. Depending on how fast you go through blades, you can select four-, eight-, or 16-blade packs shipped every one to 12 months.
Any of Harry’s pre- and post-shave skincare products can also be scheduled for auto-shipments. Choose between a shave gel or cream for a smoother shave and a post-shave balm or mist to cool and soothe your face after shaving.

Why Trust Safe Smart Living?
Tara chose two safety razors as her top choices after witnessing the dramatic results and cost savings her partner achieved by switching from cartridge razors to a DE safety razor.
