Does a home warranty seem like a scam to you? Many people associate a home warranty with paying a monthly premium and then when an appliance breaks, the technician comes and “fixes” it. Then, a week later it’s broken again. Not all home warranties are like this.
The Home Service Club (HSC) was previously in our top three for Best Home Warranty and had one of the best reputations in the warranty business. But what happened that made us remove the company from our top three? Learn more about this company’s pros and cons in The Home Service Club Reviews.

HSC Warranty has three service call fee options available for you to choose from: $65, $95 and $125. Service call fees are similar to deductibles so it’s the amount of money you pay out-of-pocket for a service call. (Please know that fees may change or there may be additional fees, so be sure to read your contract carefully.)
A higher service call fee means a lower monthly premium. The monthly premium varies depending on where you live and other considerations. In summary, you have two choices to make 1) choose a service call fee amount and 2) choose between the Basic, Standard and Comprehensive plans.
Included in all 3 plans:
- Unknown & Undetectable Pre-Existing Conditions
- Rust & Corrosion
- Lack of Routine Care and Maintenance
- Improper Installation
- Refrigerant Recapture Reclaim & Disposal
- Code Violation Fees
- Permit Fees

Finding customer reviews for HSC Warranty was fairly easy – both positive and negative. The abundance of negative reviews (including a very low BBB rating) is new.
Positive Home Service Club Reviews
We received amazing help and care from Dan with our air conditioning. The AC kept turning off on its own but it was so intermittent that our maintenance company could not find anything wrong on two separate trips. The company that was sent to us by HSC was able to figure it out right away. All-Pro Mechanical was absolutely amazing and knowledgeable. Dan stayed extra late so that he can wait for the technician and get the situation resolved. It was a big job and the knowledge and advice we got from both HSC and All-Pro was very helpful and very appreciated. We now own a brand new system and use them as our new maintenance company as well. – Roger, Consumer Affairs 7/7/2015
I am very happy with this service. The home service club has really good customer service. I was concerned with the fact that they are not locally based and thought this would affect their ability to arrange for professional technicians. I am very happy that this was not the case, though I have only used them once so far. The customer service is great, and I’m recommending to neighbors and friends. – Stan G., BBB 8/19/2015
Negative Home Service Club Reviews
This is probably the worst home warranty I’ve ever had. Don’t be enticed by the low monthly payment and 10-day wait period, it means NOTHING!! Go back to Old Republic! These people SCAM you! They pretty much want you to never use them and when you finally do file a claim, they do their absolute best to not fix it. They will call you and say it was a pre-existing condition and not cover you at all! God forbid something happens in the first month or two of coverage, ZERO chance you will be covered. Even the repairman told me to stay away from this company as in his 2 year experience (AC REPAIR), HSC only covered 1 person for half the amount and that’s because she was with them for several years. STAY AWAY!!! – Alex, Consumer Affairs 8/25/2015
When placing a service call this morning I found that I had no coverage. HSC was called out for one repair in a year. They placed some freon in my air conditioning unit and then quietly stopped charging my card for the monthly premium. They claim that it was a one year contract and that I didn’t call to renew. I didn’t notice that the premium was no longer on my statement. Their contract states: (A renewal of a previously issued contract will have no lapse in coverage provided required payment has been received by HSC prior to the expiration date of the previous contract.) What company doesn’t send a renewal notice by email, mail, or a phone call? It’s now 93 degrees in my home and I have no warranty on any of my appliances or systems. I believe that their service man found a problem and rather than fix it HSC told him to put a band-aid on it… then they dropped me without a word. – Mary W., BBB 8/4/2015
A home warranty and homeowner’s insurance policy are not the same thing. Watch this short video below to learn the difference.
Purchasing a new central air conditioner from Lowes can cost more than $4,000 and that does not even include delivery or installation! Summers and winters are getting more intense putting added stress on your heating and cooling systems. By purchasing a home warranty plan you are protecting yourself from those huge purchases or repairs that come at the most inconvenient times.
