Protect America Equipment (caption: Protect America Review)Protect America is a DIY-installation home security system that requires a three-year contract for professional monitoring, but their equipment and monthly pricing blows many similar services out of the water. And it’s one of the few security companies to let you choose between landline, broadband and cellular monitoring for any package you want.

While affordability is a major plus, is Protect America able to deliver dependable security at such a surprisingly reasonable cost? Our experts find out.

Protect America Equipment

Key Features

  • Six monitoring stations, so if one goes down (e.g., due to a natural disaster), another is there as a backup
  • You choose landline, broadband or cellular monitoring (we recommend cellular because landline can be cut and broadband won’t work during a power outage)
  • BBB rating: A
  • Pet-friendly motion sensors ignore the motion of most pets less than 40 pounds
  • Protect America’s SMART Connect app controls your smart home features, energy management and video cameras in one place
  • Z-Wave connectivity (a wireless communication protocol) for smart home equipment
  • Lifetime warranty
  • An available medical alert system (learn more about medical alert systems)
  • Protect America’s monitoring station, COPS, contacts you within 60 seconds
  • Self-installation (DIY)

Battery Backup

If the power goes out in your home, battery backup will keep your Protect America system on and your home protected. Protect America has an 18 to 24-hour battery backup (24 hours is the standard in home security).

Protect America doesn’t send alerts for power outages; however, the activity log should show a power outage. The backup battery is rechargeable, so once power is restored, the battery will recharge back to 18-24 hours, so it’s ready for any future needs.

The entire system will continue to work during a power outage unless the equipment requires a high-speed internet connection (e.g., cameras). Door/window sensors, motion sensors, glass break sensors, etc., don’t require a high-speed internet connection, so they’ll work with battery backup and you’ll be informed of any triggers to these devices.

Price

There are no installation fees, and you get up to $1,400 of wireless equipment free. Below are the monitoring packages and included equipment with each package. Unfortunately, Protect America doesn’t list all of its equipment prices, so we’re unable to share some of that information with you at this time.

Note: If you want a camera, you must upgrade to broadband or cellular monitoring.

What Do People Think Of Protect America?

Positive Reviews

I called Protect America to upgrade my system today and received excellent customer service and professionalism from Calvin, who works in the Customer Resolutions Department. He was very helpful, solved all my issues and answered any question I had. Great Job. – Kevin, Consumer Affairs 5/13/2020

Just got a new remote panel and I dreaded setting it up, as calling the PE support team usually takes a couple of hours to get it all right, no matter what device I add.  This time was much different.  Setup instructions were simple and I was up in running in like 5 minutes.  Most of the settings were right out of the box, but the three I needed to change were not intuitive, so I went to the PE online chat.  Brittany helped me and in like 15 minutes we were all done.  She was very knowledgeable, patient, and kind, and this new support process seems to be working a lot better.  I have been a customer for 12 years, and here is to 12 more! – Peter S., Yelp 2/7/2020

Negative Reviews

We had a sudden and tragic loss in our family last summer. We alarmed this home to avoid vandalism. I’ll say upfront, I erred in my understanding of the contract. In my grief and distress I agreed to 36 months. In December when the house sold, I agreed to move the system to our house. We were distraught over closing on my kids’ childhood home. The account that direct deposit was pulled from was closed. I requested of PA to forgive the contract due to a death. Not only was I met with an obstinate attitude, not once did they say “sorry for your loss” or “I can see how you’d be distressed but…” You can not email or post on their social media. There’s a form for the CEO, but no response. DO NOT USE PROTECT AMERICA. If they are this cold with a death, image how they handle a burglary. PLEASE KEEP SHOPPING.. there has to be better than this in our marketplace. – Tricia, Consumer Affairs 5/8/2020

If I could rate them lower than one star, I would. I tried to switch the account into my name three separate times from my ex-husband’s name and they wanted to run my credit each time. The first time, they didn’t even tell me that they were running my credit. Then my ex-husband says all they have to do is read the notes on the account and they would see they didn’t have to run my credit but no, they couldn’t do one simple thing because. After three calls of getting nowhere, I knew that this was not the company I needed to manage the security on my home. Their lack of integrity and inferior customer service is horrendous. – Eva J., Yelp 5/12/2020

Our research indicates that Protect America is a dependable home security company, and there are no glaring red flags that we see. If you decide to go with them, we do recommend that you upgrade to cellular monitoring. However, if you live in a remote place and don’t have reliable cell coverage or high-speed internet, you have the option of landline monitoring (vs. no monitoring at all).
