Hands down the most polite, sincere, and effective customer support team I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with in my entire life. As for the hardware, the equipment isn’t straight out of the Jetson’s, but it’s rock solid nonetheless. There seems to be a lot of people with issues having to do with the 36 month long contract terms. This shouldn’t be a huge deal if you do a tiny bit of thinking and use a little logic before signing up. Maybe ask yourself a couple questions like, “do I plan on moving overseas in the next 36 months?”, or maybe something like “do I have adequate finances to uphold my end of the contract for the full term of the contract?”. Seriously people, it is a CONTRACT…do you just go into a car dealership with your mouth running a mile a minute and proclaiming that every person you come across is as dumb as a doornail all because you want the current year model that was just released but still have over half your lease to go? Probably not, or atleast I sure hope not…why? Because when you lease a car you sign a contract for a specified period of time and you’re expected to follow the terms of the contract or face potential penalties for infractions. Same concept applies to home security…a contract is a binding agreement… didn’t we all learn that on the playground as first graders with the whole ‘pinky swear’ or something insanely simple minded like that? – Bruce B., Yelp 4/4/2019

Negative Reviews

Received faulty equipment from day one and it took several phones calls to get it rectified. My sensors kept falling off the windows and even though I told them not to send police they did anyway which cost me $25 a pop plus an extra fee when I have to renew my license with the city. Now my biggest fear is when my 3-year contract is up I’m told by several former customers that they still charge your credit card even though you have canceled service with them. I CAN’T WAIT TO GET RID OF THEM!!! PROTECT AMERICA IS ONLY LOOKING OUT FOR THEMSELVES AND SCREWING THE LITTLE PEOPLE! – Donna, ConsumerAffairs 4/5/2019

Stay away! Don’t bother! What is it about alarm companies that they seem to want to trap people in? Protect America is no exception. Their system functions correctly, but the company is terrible. Their is almost nothing you can do self-service on the web site; basically any change requires dealing with some person and answering the same questions over and over. In our case, we are moving to another state and will be in temporary housing for several months while we look for a house. There’s simply no way I’m paying a monthly charge while the system sits in a box. I offered to pay a reasonable cancellation fee for the 18 months remaining on our extension and they declined. So I just blocked their auto payment with my bank. We can argue about this later and get to a reasonable conclusion. Really painful to deal with this company. – Jon P., Yelp 2/12/2019

I’m almost ready to pull the trigger on Protect America given how attractive their pricing is (besides I’m convinced the home security industry is not actually security companies, just a bunch of marketing companies that spend a lot of $ on advertising). I do have a question on their battery backup first though – you say 18-24 hours. Does this mean that in the event of a prolonged power outage, the system would stay online for a maximum of 24 hours? What happens after that? Does none of it work anymore or does the signal to the monitoring station simply get interrupted? In other words, is the battery backup for the cellular part or for the entire system plus sensors? Thanks in advance for your time!

So I’m really tempted to go with Protect America given their pricing and generally positive reviews. But the cancellation nightmare stories are making me hesitate. So just to clarify, if I sign up, I have to sign up for 3 years, and if I cancel, I have to pay the full remaining contract amount? That seems kind of crazy given that the trial period is only 2 weeks! Does the trial period start when the equipment is shipped, or when I receive it? And how does the Protect American cancelation policy compare to industry norms?

Great review – I’m so tempted to go with Protect America’s $19.99/month landline plan because it’s just so much more affordable. Can I get just about any piece of equipment/device with this, the only difference is that the monitoring is transmitted via landline instead of cellular? If that’s the case it seems like a steal.

And on the subject of landline monitoring – you mention it’s not as secure. Isn’t that mostly the case in older homes where the wires are exposed/above ground? In newer builds phone lines tend to be buried underground and IMO would be difficult to get to without creating a noticeable commotion in the yard.
