In 2016, Google released Google Home, a cylindrical speaker that responded to user’s voice commands and served as a hub for home automation. It was Google’s first foray into smart home speakers. While the original device was discontinued, “Google Home” today represents the brand’s entire smart home platform, including Nest devices, the Google Home app, and Google Assistant.
The Google Nest line of smart home products enables users to speak voice commands via Google Assistant, the company’s virtual assistant. Users can access Google Assistant via Nest smart displays, smart speakers, tablets, and TVs.
Google Assistant is an excellent tool for automating your home, and when you combine it with a compatible home security system, you take that automation to the next level. Several top home security systems integrate with Google Home to activate voice commands and increase your ease of use.
4 Reasons To Integrate Google Home With A Home Security System
1. Voice Activation
You can use your Nest Audio speaker to activate or disarm your security system, as well as many other features, by only using your voice. For instance, you can say, “Hey Google, arm my home security system.”
2. Total Home Integration
Google Home can link all your smart home devices and security in one place. Its voice activation is convenient for home security and automation features like sensors, locks, motion detectors, thermostats, lights, outlets, and garage doors.
3. Smart Camera Streaming
When your security system works with a Google Home-compatible security camera, you can stream the footage using voice commands to your Google Home app, Chromecast device, or Chromecast TV. Not all cameras are Google Home-compatible, so consider this if it’s an essential feature for you.
4. Use Various Google Nest Products To Control Your System
Any device that syncs with Google Home can connect to your home security. These devices include the Google Home smart speakers, Nest Secure and other Nest devices, Google phones, TVs, and computers. Google Home makes connecting your devices and integrating your home security easy.
What Are The Best Home Security Systems That Work With Google Home?
We’ve researched all the security systems that work with Google Home. Our rankings consider many factors, including ease of integration, compatible features, customer support, security, and more.
Winner: Vivint Review
Vivint is our #1 pick because its highly-rated security system and many of its advanced home automation features integrate easily with Google Nest Audio and Google Nest Mini. Vivint partnered with Google Home in 2018 to strengthen its integration.
You can use Google Home voice commands with Vivint for the alarm system, door locks, thermostats, lights, and more. In addition to being Google Home compatible, Vivint also has a user-friendly app that allows users to control its extensive home security and automation equipment lineup.
Direct commands can also be used when you ask Google Assistant to complete a task. For instance, you can say, “Hey Google, arm my home security system.” You won’t have to ask Google to ask Vivint to do it.

Runner-Up: Nest Secure Review
Not surprisingly, the Nest Secure system allows for an effortless integration with Google Home. You can use voice activation for the alarm system, video doorbell, locks, and thermostat. It also lets you stream footage from Nest cameras (both indoor and outdoor) to the Google Home app or any Chromecast device or TV by using direct voice commands.
Nest Secure didn’t take our top spot because we think Vivint is a better overall home security system choice than Nest Secure.
Disclaimer: Google stopped selling the Nest Secure security system in 2020. Existing customers can still use their systems, but Google has announced that it will officially discontinue support on April 8, 2024. This will effectively make the system non-operational. You will also not be able to use the Nest app to check the status of your system or control your Nest Secure devices. Because of this, we advise against buying a Nest Secure system from a third-party seller.
Google has since partnered with ADT and is offering existing Nest Secure users a free ADT Self Setup security system (which uses Google Nest products).
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
Stylish design | More expensive than competitors |
Security cameras are Google Home-compatible | Not compatible with as many devices as competitors |

Google Nest Skill
Using Google Assistant, you can control all Nest devices. Nest Secure also works with Kasa, LIFX, and Philips Hue, allowing you to control smart plugs and lighting via these third-party options. Set your Philips Hue bulbs on home mode while you’re away, and they’ll automatically turn on and off periodically to deter burglars. (We share other easy theft prevention techniques in our article on best burglar deterrents.) One thing you won’t be able to do is disarm your system with Google Assistant, which is a security protocol.
5 Voice Commands To Use Google Assistant With Nest Secure
- “Okay Google, make it warmer.”
- “Okay Google, play the porch camera on the Chromecast.”
- “Okay Google, set Nest Secure to Home and Guarding.”
- “Okay Google: Is the front door locked?”
- “Okay Google: What’s the status of my security?”
Pricing
Nest Secure is only available through third-party retailers. View additional Nest smart home accessories via Google Store.
Monitoring
Brinks Home Security monitors Nest Secure. On April 8, 2024, Google will no longer support Nest Secure. At that time, professional monitoring will no longer be available. New monitoring subscriptions are not being accepted.

3rd Place: ADT Review
ADT is our #3 pick because it easily integrates with Google Nest. Google Home syncs with all of ADT’s hardwired or wireless security systems. With ADT Pulse, you can use Google Voice control to arm your system, lock your door, turn lights on and off, and control your thermostat. You can use direct commands when you ask Google Assistant to complete a task.
The ADT Pulse app, which syncs seamlessly with Google Home, also allows you to create scenes where you link multiple actions to co-occur, like turning off lights and locking doors simultaneously. You can also group smart devices into “rooms” on Google Home and control all of them with a single command.
One thing to consider is that ADT cameras aren’t Google-compatible, so you won’t be able to stream footage through Google Home.
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
Has 10 monitoring station | Three-year monitoring contract required |
Six-month guarantee | Requires a technician to visit your home and install |
Can be professionally installed in your home within one to two days after ordering in most cases | Cameras have 720p resolution, not 1080p |
Includes basic equipment at no additional cost | Many customer service complaints about ADT including extra charges on bills, incomplete installations, high-pressure sales tactics, and more |
Compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Home | Among the most expensive compared to its competitors |
Many customer service complaints about ADT, including extra charges on bills, incomplete installations, high-pressure sales tactics, and more | May charge 75% of the remaining contract if you cancel early |

Brinks Review
As mentioned above, Brinks monitors for Nest Secure, but it also has its own security system compatible with Google Home. Brink didn’t make it as a top pick for us because we don’t rank it as high as some other home security systems.
This system syncs with Google Home to arm your system and control lights, locks, garage doors, and thermostats. You can also stream cameras on any device with Chromecast. Again, because they offer Nest Secure monitoring, you can choose Nest products when setting up your system.
Brinks doesn’t work with direct commands, so you must ask Google Home to ask Alarm.com to complete the task. You’ll also want to consider contracts and pricing.

Scout Alarm Review
Scout is a DIY security system with the option of professional monitoring and is compatible with Google Home in several ways.
You can arm and disarm your system through Google Home and integrate Nest products and many other third-party devices, including some Google Home-compatible security cameras.
Direct commands don’t work with this system. You’ll have to ask Google Home to tell Scout to complete a task. Also, we don’t rank the Scout system as high as other home security systems, and you’ll want to ensure it meets your home security needs.

Google Home Compatible Security Systems FAQ’s
Here are some frequently asked questions from our readers. Don’t see yours? Let us know in the comments!
Why Did Google Discontinue Nest Secure?
Google entered the home security market with Nest Secure in 2017. Poor product sales are probably largely to blame for the system’s discontinuation. Nest Secure was expensive relative to alternative products and failed to gain traction in the three years it was on the market. Google has invested in ADT since 2021, which appears to be its alternate route of acquiring a stake in the hot home security market.
Support for existing Nest Secure and Dropcam customers will officially end on April 8, 2024.
Can Google Home Connect To My Security Camera?
Depends on the brand. Google Home is compatible with Google-branded products, like Nest security cameras. It is also compatible with third-party brands such as Arlo and Wyze.
